Langushing in La Veta

La Veta describes itself as “small and laid back.” This is an understatement. Located in the foothills of the Spanish Peaks and near the Cucharas River Valley, it is very beautiful. On a summer Saturday evening, we arrived amongst that beauty, checked into the La Veta Inn around 6:45pm, then headed out in hopes of finding some dinner. Well, that “laid back” vibe means, on a Saturday night, the restaurants in town all closed at 7pm.

Thankfully, we ended up on a gorgeous drive through the aforementioned Cucharas River Valley on route 11, past incredible beauty, to find ourselves in Cuchara, which had a completely opposite vibe to sleepy La Veta. the Dog Bar and Grill in Cuchara was full of families, live music, a party atmosphere, and really good burgers and beer. In the end, I am glad we ate and drank in Cuchara, but in hopes of a good night’s sleep, languid La Veta was actually quite perfect. This good night’s sleep allowed me a wonderful sunrise walk through town and to a gorgeous peak at the Sangre de Cristo mountains at dawn.
